Hanoi – Hanoi is relatively small and runs at quiet an unhurried pace for a capital city. Resting in the Red river delta region, the center is a mix of tree-lined avenues, maze like back streets with lively merchants’ stores, temples and lakes and has many fine colonial buildings.

EXPLORE COLONIAL HANOI, A WALK BACK IN TIME
At 08:00 hours delve into Hanoi’s colorful history. Learn about the life and times of former President Ho Chi Minh, who played a key role in the nation’s journey towards independence. Visit the mausoleum where his body is embalmed and see his humble stilted house, which was built in the style of an ethnic village home. Continue to the One Pillar Pagoda, a unique 11th century structure dedicated to King Ly Thai To’s son. Visit Hoa Lo Prison and discover why it became known as the Hanoi Hilton during the Vietnam War. Next, visit the Temple of Literature, where Vietnam’s royal family and elite society were educated for almost 700 years. The menu celebrates Vietnam country’s rich culinary diversity, showcasing a variety of regional flavors.

You will have a chance talking to him and his wife to learn more about the water puppets, and his family tradition. Walk to the private theatre, enjoy the performance, just your group only and hands-on to experience how to perform a puppet.

Water Puppetry is a traditional and unique Vietnamese Art. This highly entertaining form of theatre uses the water surface as stage. Standing waist-deep in the water, the master puppeteers are hidden behind a bamboo screen. The technical virtuosity of the puppeteers is startling and the music enticing. The entire atmosphere is truly enchanting. Many of the brief episodes relate to scenes of Vietnamese daily life.

Transfer back to Hanoi 36 Street Old Quarter. Take a cyclo ride through the Old Quarter, located between the Lake of the Restored Sword, the Long Bien Bridge, a former city rampart, and a citadel wall. The Old Quarter started as a snake and alligator-infested swamp. It later evolved into a cluster of villages made up of houses on stilts, and was unified by Chinese administrators who built ramparts around their headquarters. The Old Quarter began to acquire its reputation as a crafts area when the Vietnamese attained independence in the 11th century and King Ly Thai To built his palace there. In the early 13th century, the collection of tiny workshop villages which clustered around the palace walls evolved into craft cooperatives, or guilds. Skilled craftsmen migrated to the Quarter, and artisan guilds were formed by craftsmen originating from the same village and performing similar services.

In the evening
At 07:00 hours, depart the hotel to Luk Lak restaurant for dinner, a cozy and elegant place serving variety of dishes that combines the best of traditional and modern Vietnamese cuisines.

Hue Imperial City – Set on the bank of the Perfume river, Hue was the capital of Vietnam between 1802 and 1945 under the Nguyen Emperors, and later French colonial rule. Since the early 19th century, it has been regarded as Vietnam’s center of learning which, with its traditions of Buddhism, give the city a sophisticated air. Hue witnessed some of the most aggressive action of the Vietnam-American war including the 1968 Tet Offensive, but in spite of this many of monuments to its imperial past remain, and UNESCO declared the city a World Heritage Site in 1993.

LEGACIES OF HUE IMPERIAL CITY
At 08:00 walk in the footsteps of Vietnamese emperors and trace their rise and fall in the central city of Hue. Begin with a private cruise along the Perfume river then stop at Thien Mu pagoda, constructed by Lord Nguyen Hoang in 1601. The pagoda is located in the Northern bank of the Perfume river, about 5km from Hue city center. Next, visit the Imperial Citadel where the Nguyen Dynasty ruled between 1802 and 1945. The citadel still contains over 100 buildings, including the emperors’ living quarters in the Forbidden Purple City. Take a short drive to the tomb of Tu Duc, the Poet Emperor. A lover of romance and eastern philosophies, the emperor designed his own tomb within an enchanting garden of pine trees and frangipanis overlooking a lake. Stop by an incense-making village to see how thin sticks of bamboo are dyed and dried in a mixture of sandalwood, cinnamon, or pine-scented powder to create ceremonial items used at temples and shrines all over Vietnam.

Today’s lunch will be Seafood feast at Lap An Lagoon, surrounded by the imposing Bach Ma Mountain and the magnificent Lang Co Bay, regarded as the most impressive natural landscape in the poetic city of Hue. Leave the charms of Hue behind and embark on a scenic overland journey to Hoi An. The drive takes approximately three hours, excluding time for sightseeing en-route. The journey will take you south from Hue along Highway 1A to Hoi An, over the spectacular Hai Van Pass (weather permitting). Just outside Hoi An, the highway meets the Hai Van Pass, meaning Pass of the Ocean Clouds. Here, the Truong Son mountain range cuts across the narrow center of the country. This create a barrier to the cold air streams from the north and so results in thick cloudbanks over the peaks. So relax and enjoy the views along the way on one of the most beautiful drives in Southeast Asia.

DAY 6 | HOIAN ANCIENT TOWN
Hoi An – The ancient town of Hoi An is located south of Da Nang on the banks of the Thu Bon river. Occupied by early western traders, Hoi An was one of the major trading centers of Southeast Asia in the 16 century. Hoi An has a distinct Chinese atmosphere with low, tile-roofed houses and narrow streets; the original structure of some of these streets still remains almost intact. All the houses were made of rare wood, decorated with lacquered boards and panels engraved with Chinese characters. Pillars were also carved with ornamental designs.

THE DISCOVERY OF HOIAN ANCIENT TOWN, THU BON RIVER & CHAM RUINS
This morning, take a stroll through winding streets of old Hoi An, where rows of vibrant yellow shophouses are adorned with multi-colored lanterns, given World Heritage status by UNESCO. Once called Faifo, Hoi An was the most important port of Vietnam during colonial and pre-colonial times. Due to the monsoons, many Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Arab, Indian, Dutch, French and even Portuguese trading vessels had to stop here to wait for the wind to change direction. During the months between monsoons, these merchants built lodgings and trading houses. Their influence can still be seen today in the town’s unique and varied architecture and culture. In more recent times, the port of Hoi An continually silted up and became impractical for larger modern-day vessels, so it was relocated to Da Nang, leaving Hoi An as an almost forgotten museum of architecture before its more recent rebirth and redevelopment as a result of tourism.

Admire the Old House of Tan Ky, an 18th century merchant’s house that has been lovingly preserved through five generations and features Chinese and Japanese influences. See where the Chinese migrant community once gathered for meetings and social events at the Fukien Assembly Hall, all fine examples of the stylistic syncretism of this vibrant community and walk through a 400-year-old covered bridge built in Japanese style. Then get in touch with your creative side and make your own traditional Hoi An lantern at a studio led by skilled artisans. After the workshop, take a boat for a ride along the Thu Bon River. Lined with trees and swaying palms, this peaceful waterway creates visions of traditional row boats, quiet pastures and fishermen going about their day.

Option 1: This afternoon, you’ll be driven to the 4th-century Cham religious sanctuary of My Son. Visiting later in the afternoon will help to avoid the morning crowds at this small site and provide wonderful, soft light for photography. My Son, which is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is located in a beautiful green valley surrounded by impressive mountains. While it is a small site, the ruins at My Son are the largest and most intact remaining in Vietnam.

Option 2: Drive to An Bang beach & free time for walking along the white sandy beach or swimming. Late in the day you’ll return to the resort. Enjoy the evening on your own.

Still largely maintaining its 1970’s decor, the palace rooms are surprisingly spartan. The dank, reinforced basement has large-scale maps, communications equipment and tunnels. Next, get on a pedicab, one person per pedicab, for an adventure through city landmarks and busy traffic to the Emperor of Jade Pagoda, a Chinese-style pagoda built in the early 20th century. DAY 8 | HO CHI MINH CITY
Cu Chi Tunnels – The first & the longest tunnels dug by hands since 1940s. Why? In order to combat better-supplied American and South Vietnamese forces during the Vietnam War, Communist guerrilla troops known as Viet Cong (VC) dug tens of thousands of miles of tunnels, including an extensive network running underneath the Cu Chi district northwest of Saigon. Soldiers used these underground routes to house troops, transport communications and supplies, lay booby traps and mount surprise attacks, after which they could disappear underground to safety. To combat these guerrilla tactics, U.S. and South Vietnamese forces trained soldiers known as “tunnel rats” to navigate the tunnels in order to detect booby traps and enemy troop presence.

CU CHI TUNNELS UNCOVERED BY PRIVATE SPEEDBOAT
07:00 Transfer to Bach Dang pier, take a speedboat cruise about one and a half hours northwest of Ho Chi Minh City to explore one of the region’s most well-known wartime landmarks the Cu Chi tunnels. Catch a glimpse of life during the war as you experience crawling in tight, narrow passageways and through a series of caverns which consist of storage rooms, make-shift hospitals and sleeping quarters. Meet Mr. Nam, a Cu Chi guerrilla who’s still alive at the present, had survived through the Vietnam war when joining the guerrilla force since he was sixteen years old. Transfer back to Ho Chi Minh City by private deluxe coach, en-route stop at the rubber tree plantation. Lunch at Hoa Tuc restaurant, a restaurant located in an old French opium refinery, serving contemporary Vietnamese cuisines.
Please note: The Cu Chi Tunnels are very narrow, confined spaces which may cause discomfort, particularly for those who experience claustrophobia, fear of the dark, irregular cardiac conditions or similar health conditions.
